When the Monroe Theatre first lit up in Woodsfield, Ohio, in 1939, its stage hosted everyone from toe-tapping vaudeville acts to silver-screen legends. But after the final curtain fell in 1977, the building didn’t stay quiet—at least, not for the spirits who’d grown fond of the spotlight. For 43 years, the marquee stayed dark while unseen ushers kept “working”: phantom footsteps in the wings, dusty projectors flickering to life, and vintage tunes drifting from nowhere in particular. Theater and stage manager Rick Brown joins us to reveal why he never feels alone during late-night checks, which row you should avoid if you value personal space, and how former employees still refuse to clock out, decades after taking their final bows.
